Stuff I Learned - 20 Dec 2012

I've taken a little bit of a break the last few days - after the incident in Connecticut, I needed a few days off from all the media that was flowing through the internet, cable, radio, and the like.  I've been picking up stuff nevertheless, and here are a few things that I was able to pick up during that time...

Quotes:

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go."  - William Feather

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." - Franklin Roosevelt

"Diamonds are nothing more than chunks of coal that stuck to their jobs." - Malcolm Forbes

“On no account, brood over your wrong-doing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean.” - Aldous Huxley

"The best way to gain self-confidence is to do what you are afraid to do." - William Jennings Bryan

“The more you give value, the more you will get your way.” - Jeffrey Gitomer

"In economics the majority is always wrong." - John Kenneth Galbraith

"It is not work that kills men, it is worry. Work is healthy; you can hardly put more on a man than he can bear. But worry is rust upon the blade. It is not movement that destroys the machinery, but friction."  - Henry Ward Beecher

Stuff I Learned - 14 Dec 2012

God loves the families of the Sandy Hook victims more than anyone can imagine, and I know that He will become very present in the lives of many over the next few weeks. May He bless them and keep them, may He make His face shine upon them and be gracious to them; may He lift up his countenance upon them and give them peace.

Out of all Master Minds in the world, there is only one true Master and today, I quote from the great treasury of wisdom that He gives us through His word:

"He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord." - Psalm 113:9

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court." - Psalm 127:3-5

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." - Psalm 139:13-16

"A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world." - John 16:21

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." - James 1:17

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. - Romans 15:13

God bless the people of Newtown, Connecticut...

Stuff I Learned - 13 Dec 2012

Sometimes we go through phases where it seems we might know someone, or know a friend of a friend or relative, who leave us suddenly. A stroke, a fall, or a long-lasting struggle with an illness.  No one is ever ready for something like this.

While it doesn't seem fair at times, the world doesn't owe us an eternity. However, we owe it to ourselves to make the most of our life and our lives to count for eternity. Since we never know when our time will come, we need to learn to just live for today.  As for me, even if it hasn't been a great day (I'm learning not to have bad days), I have another day to try again. That's another miracle of life.

Quotes:

"Enjoy yourself. It's later than you think." - Chinese Proverb

"Live every day as if it were going to be your last; for one day you're sure to be right." - Harry "Breaker" Harbord Morant

"Every man dies. Not every man really lives." - Braveheart

"Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive." - Elbert Hubbard

"As you grow older, you'll find the only things you regret are the things you didn't do." - Zachary Scott

"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today." - James Dean (maybe not the best example)

Article Summary
The 5-A Formula for Creating a Memory of the Future
(Courtesy: Joe Tye - article at http://bit.ly/WA3rsw)

Articulation: The first step is knowing what you want, and to be as specific as possible. Instead of just a "nice house," or a "nice car," make the time to describe the ideal location, (city, state, climate, floor plan, decor, landscapine), or type of vehicle (make, model, year, accessories). The more vivid your image of what you're looking for, the other senses take effect and as they become more involved, the higher the likelihood of accomplishment.

Affirmation: A vital step, because we dream in pictures but worry in words. You have the picture of the house or the car, but the little voice tells you that you're not worthy or able to attain it. Self-talk such as "You can't afford it," creeps into our heads, and causes doubt. It's important to counteract this with talk about what you're going to do to attain that which you desire.

Action: Without action, a dream is just a wish. Action is the gold standard that determines the difference between daydreaming and creating a vision for your future. But yoy don't have to be overwhelmed by taking such a huge step out of your confort zone. Small steps applied persistently will create great results. Every action you take in pursuit of your dream, reinforces a future reality in your mind, where the battle is fought. The secret is to do something daily.

Asking: Any dream worthwhile will require help from others, and the way you get that help is by asking for it. To buy your house, you'll need to ask the bank for the money, as an example. If you're unable to secure the loan, a good question to ask would be on what you need to do to make it happen. Many banking or lending officers are more than willing to help someone who is willing to try.

Adaptation: You must be willing to adapt and adjust your plans as you go along. Sometimes that means change. Even Bill Gates or Steve Jobs didn't imagine at the beginning how big Microsoft or Apple would become when they started their companies.

Exercise: Draw a picture of something that is meaningful to you - a new house, career, school, car, weight loss, relationship, et cetera. Then write down at least one thing you can do for each of the five characteristics of creating a memory for the future. If you make a commitment to do those things, you will have moved dramatically closer to transforming that dream of today into your reality of tomorrow.

Concept (by Jack Canfield):

Inverse Paranoia:  To believe that every event in your life is the seed for your greater good; something meant to enrich you, empower you or advance your cause, imagining how much easier it would be to succeed in life if you were constantly expecting the world to support you and bring you opportunity.  It's an easy concept to grasp this belief for yourself, just by thinking about the last time that a terrible event turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Ask yourself what benefit exists, or; what you can learn or do differently next time, or; what action can I take now, or; who can I turn to for help in this particular case?

Remember that there are three things that can be controlled in a bad situation are: the thoughts you think; the images you visualize; the actions you are taking (including what you say to others).

Story:

The Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871, claimed more than 200 lives and destroyed over 7,000 buildings.  On that same day, a great fire occurred in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, claiming up to 2500 lives and destroying over one million acres of timberland.

The Great Peshtigo Fire remains the deadliest fire in U.S. history, yet very few people know about it. The media was centered in and around Chicago and Peshtigo was small and remote, along with the dozen other villages nearby that were destroyed.

Life is the same way.  Thousands of people are doing significant things daily to help others, for the satisfaction of doing something with no recognition or reward, save for the joy they received by helping others.  Without them, who knows what this world would be like?  One thing is certain, if not for those people, it would be much worse than it is today.

Be a difference maker for others and it will make a difference in your life.

Story:

People are still blaming the economy, the government, and their company's policies, while neglecting the basic business-building activities that are easy to do.  Everything we need to succeed is well within our reach.  The big reason so few people take advantage of opportunity is simply due to neglect.

Neglect is like an infection that if untreated, will spread into everything we do, leading to a breakdown of a joy-filled and prosperous life.

Failing to do what we should do leads to guilt, then erosion of our confidence, decrease in our activity level, declination of our results, weakening of our attitude, negative thinking, depression, and more neglect.

To reverse this, take the time to make the choice to do something that is easy to do as it is not to do, something that will parlay itself into something big down the road.  A successful life is a succession of making good decisions each day and strung together.

Quote:

"The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire, not things we fear."  — Brian Tracy

_____________________________________________________________________
Story:

It’s true that you can remember the future more clearly than remembering the past? What’s that mean? None of us remember our first birthday, but if there were photographs taken, then we have a visualization of what happened due to those photos that are available, and it’s pretty evident by the photograph that it was a special day!

Yet, many people know what they’re going to be doing tomorrow (work), where they’ll be, what they’ll be wearing, who they’ll be working with, all because they do it day after day, even though tomorrow hasn’t occurred yet. They’ll just “remember” it because it’ll be a lot like today and yesterday.

The key is in the ability to “remember” a tomorrow that is somehow different than it was yesterday or today, but moving on after tomorrow. It means the difference between positive thinking and wishful thinking:

Positive thinking, which is expecting something to happen by working at it;

Wishful thinking, which is hoping for something to happen, but doing nothing for it to happen.

For a better tomorrow, one of the best things to do is transform the dream of today into the reality of tomorrow, by turning a goal into a memory for your future. Get into the practice and you'll find that your memories of the future are clearer and more accurate than your memories of the past.
